TEDxNewtown: Let's 'BREAK IT'

The first-ever TEDx event that dedicates to Inner West Sydney is here! We're thrilled to announce that TEDxNewtown 2019 will be taking place on Saturday, 23rd of November 2019. Expect a day full of inspiring talks from the local voices of Newtown, workshops to build new skills, fun activities to enjoy and entertainment to relax to.

The theme for TEDxNewtown 2019 is called 'BREAK IT'. The ideology behind 'BREAK IT' is to 'break' away from the different influences that are visible when we pursue a certain goal. These influences may include physical, mental, financial, social or emotional barriers - just to name a few. This year, we look to BREAK boundaries, BREAK the rules, BREAK free and BREAK through all the challenges that we, as humans; experience at different stages in life.

CRS x MCM | In Discussion: The Role of a Green Bean Buyer

Next week Aislinn will be heading up to Sydney, where she is joining us at the CRS Academy for a conversation exploring the role of a green coffee importer. We’ll be unpacking how MCM selects, pays for and prices coffee, along with how they work with both supplier and customer. Join us on the night for an open and collaborative conversation about what a green importer actually does, both at origin and here in Australia. Come prepared with questions!

As always, Melbourne Coffee Merchants will have some delicious coffees to share as well with beers and pizzas afterwards.

Learn more about MCM here!

Assertiveness Training for the Hospitality Industry

  • UTS Business School (Building 8) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A common problem in the hospitality industry is a lack of assertiveness. CRS together with MAP IT FORWARD are changing that.

About this Event

A lack of assertiveness in workplaces can result in aggressive behaviour, where people violate the rights of others, or passive behaviour, where people allow their rights to be violated. Both extremes can lead to harms to one's mental health.

Led by psychologist Dr. Jamie Berry and Founder of MAP IT FORWARD Lee Safar, this full-day workshop will help hospitality workers develop their assertiveness skills in order to produce better long-term mental health and happier workplaces.

After completing this workshop, you will be able to:

  • distinguish assertive behaviour from passive or aggressive behaviour;

  • demonstrate greater verbal and non-verbal assertiveness skills;

  • apply assertiveness within your workplace to improve the health and well-being of yourself and your colleagues and customers;

  • apply assertiveness more broadly within your life to maximise care to yourself and minimise harm to others.

This workshop will benefit people who work and own businesses in:

  • Cafes

  • Roasteries

  • The general coffee industry

  • FOH in restaurants

  • Chefs, kitchen hands and other BOH staff

  • Bartenders and bar staff

  • Hotel staff

  • Staff and leadership of larger coporate hospitality businesses

  • Business owners in the hospitality industry

  • Leadership and management staff within the hospitality industry

  • Food and beverage retail stores

  • Hospitality industry suppliers

This full day event is limited to 100 attendees. This event will be recorded and made available as an online course soon after the event is over.

Your ticket will include:

  • The full-day interactive workshop and welcome pack

  • Morning and afternoon tea

  • All day coffee service

  • Catered lunch

This event is presented by MAP IT FORWARD in partnership with Collective Roasting Solutions. Event sponsors will be announced shortly

Can You Taste The Roasting System - Anne Cooper (Roastress Coops)

'Can You Taste the Roasting System'
This workshop is beneficial to ALL ROASTERS but is targeted toward Intermediate to Advanced Roasters.

Ticket: $200 per person
Limited tickets available.

A 4-Hour workshop & research project presented & designed for SCA Roasters Guild by Anne Cooper.

WHO IS ANNE COOPER (aka Roastress Coops)?

Anne Cooper in association with Rob Hoos has been conducting research to answer the question commonly asked by roasters as they change roasting machinery, whether due to their business scaling up, moving to a new brand/model or using someone elses machinery as they undergo repairs.

Anne's research was born in order to prove that you can't taste the difference, it is the profile that influences flavour, not the machine. This workshop is aimed to help intermediate to advanced roasters better understand their roasting systems, but it is beneficial to all in understanding;

  • How to match profiles across multiple different roasting machines.

  • Information regarding upgrading to new machinery in your roastery.

  • Understanding/Discussing roasting techniques & theories.

We will begin the workshop with a triangulation tasting, tasting samples of the same coffee roasted on three different machines with the exact same profile and gauge your thoughts. We will then explore roasting techniques and theories, with a live demonstration performing practical roasting between a Probat and Loring system.

This workshop is ensured to be insightful, educational and informative.

This workshop is in the lead-up to Collective Roasting Solutions' 'Roaster Smackdown 2019'.
Sign-up to our newsletter on our website
HERE to keep up-to-date on our upcoming events.

"Will the customer taste the difference if it is roasted on a different machine?"

Learning Curves- Intensive Roasting Course

'Learning Curves' is an advanced, intensive 3 day course designed to get you on the right path and thinking critically about each area of science that creates a clean cup of coffee.

Roasting coffee is a sensorial endeavour and what we offer is a hands on and thorough curriculum designed to instil a sound understanding of each of the subjects you must have your head around to be a successful roaster.

We have identified these 3 fundamental areas of focus and have designed activities to enhance the development of your skill and personal sensibility for the 'art' of roasting.
